What is The Garden of Words?
The Garden of Words is a short Japanese anime film by Makoto Shinkai. It tells the story of a young boy and an older woman who meet by chance on rainy mornings in a quiet garden. The movie is about loneliness, connection, and healing.

Story Begins – A Rainy Morning
One rainy day in Tokyo, Takao skips school and goes to a garden. There, he meets Yukari, a quiet woman sitting alone, drinking beer and eating chocolate. They don’t talk much, but their meeting feels special.
Every time it rains, they both come back to the same garden. Slowly, they begin talking. Takao tells her he wants to design shoes. Yukari listens and shares little about herself. They both feel peace in each other’s company.
Their Bond Grows
As rainy days continue, their bond becomes stronger. Takao starts making a shoe design just for Yukari. He doesn’t know much about her life, but he wants to make her happy. He feels inspired by her presence.
Yukari smiles more when she’s with him. But she hides a secret: she is a teacher at his school. She was bullied by students and felt lost, so she stopped going to work.
Truth Comes Out
One day, Takao finds out that Yukari is his teacher. He feels shocked but still wants to help her. She tells him everything and thanks him for being kind.
Rainy season ends, and they stop meeting at the garden. One day, Takao visits her apartment during a rainstorm. They talk and fight. Takao says he loves her, but she says she’s going away.
Final Goodbye
Before leaving, Yukari tells Takao he helped her learn to walk again – not with her legs, but with her heart. She had lost hope, but his kindness brought her back. They cry and hug. Then she leaves.
Takao decides to work harder for his dream of becoming a shoemaker. Even though they are apart, they both remember the rainy mornings in the garden.
Message of the Movie:
Sometimes strangers can understand us more than friends. Rain can bring sadness, but also new beginnings. Healing can come from small, quiet moments.
